Martin F. Shapiro, MD, PhD, MPH, is a physician, health services researcher, professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and distinguished professor emeritus of medicine and public health at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research for 25 years. He is the author of Getting Doctored: Critical Reflections on Becoming a Physician.
Published in January 2023, Dr. Shapiro’s The Present Illness: American Health Care and its Afflictions weaves together history, sociology, research and his experience as a clinician to understand our troubled healthcare system. He explains that the system can’t be fixed without significant changes across society. Dr. Shapiro looks to medical schools, health systems, scientists, corporations, insurers, investors and innovators to understand their roles in the troubled system.
Join MATTER and UChicago Medicine at MATTER for an intimate roundtable discussion and Q&A with Dr. Shapiro on the U.S. healthcare system and healthcare reform.
This event will be held in-person at MATTER and will not be livestreamed.
